Famous Game

Famous Game - SAFC 1 - 0 Aston Villa

Each season when the fixtures are released, I always browse down the page to look for Aston Villa at home. There isn’t any particular reason why but I enjoy our games against the Villains.

The only explanation I have for it is that I always remember going on a Stadium tour when I was younger and I got to see the fantastic painting of a game between Villa and Sunderland in the main reception of the SOL, which was produced by Thomas Hemy in the late 1800’s. In its entirety it captures everything that I love about being a football fan - I love the history that comes with supporting Sunderland and I suppose that I am also a little bit envious that I have never sampled what football was like years and years ago.

Famous game – Sunderland 1 – 4 Bolton, 2008.

When doing my research for this piece, looking back over past games against Bolton, I really wanted to bookmark a game I could talk about that had some significance to us as fans. In fact, when writing these blogs, I tend to prefer to focus more on games which have meaning or a story and, if anything, allow us to reflect upon how things were much worse once than they are at the moment.

It didn’t take me long to stumble across the Bolton game in November 2008 - It was to be the game that pretty much shaped what we are at present.
